I hope all of you experienced a Thanksgiving Break free of travel woes and delays, full of good food, and surrounded by at least a few people whose company you enjoy. If your vacation leaned more towards the Planes, Trains, & Automobiles variety, at least you’ve got some memorable stories to share? Some of you may recall that leading up to the Break, a few editions of Grey Matters included passing references to deep-frying a turkey, and a Buffalo resident using his drone to capture video of a colossal snow storm. So I knew right away how this Grey Matters edition would begin when I stumbled upon a news article about a man who….. wait for it….. used a drone to deep fry a turkey. This article only heightened my curiosity about the apparent proliferation of personally-owned drones, and apparently others are starting to debate the impact and unintended consequences of this trend. So before you entertain your child’s request to buy him/her a drone for the upcoming holiday, you might want to click on that above article.
A pretty short Grey Matters today, but I want to return your attention to some important reminders:
Save the Date! As mentioned previously, we will be hosting Meghan McCoy from the Massachusetts Aggression Reduction Center on Monday, December 15th at 6:30pm in the RJ Grey Library. Earlier that day, Ms. McCoy will be delivering her annual presentation to our 7th grade students about cyberbullying and engaging them in a discussion about the benefits and risks of maintaining a social media presence. The evening presentation will be for parents who are interested in hearing a bit more about this issue, and getting a snapshot of what was discussed with students earlier that day.
The first set of parent-teacher conferences will be held on Thursday, December 11 from 11:30 to 2:30pm. Please know that at this point, there is very little flexibility for switching times. If you do need to cancel for any reason, please email Katy Frey at firstname.lastname@example.org. A friendly reminder that on our three conference days (December 11 & 16, and January 8), students have an early release and are dismissed at 10:40am.
Tryouts for Winter Sports starts this week (8th grade Boys Basketball is the following week). Please refer to the RJ Grey Athletics page for the schedule. All students interested in trying out must have a signed “Green Form” completed and signed by the nurse before they can participate.
We are now in the midst of the Yearbook purchasing period, which ends on December 24. Families can order online or by completing the form distributed at school. For details about either option, you can click here.
A quick staffing note that is most important for families on 7 Gold and 7 Orange. Ms. Katie McGowan is returning today from her maternity leave, and is eager to resume her role as the counselor for those teams, and we’re excited to be welcoming her back. For this Fall Trimester, Ms. Molly Morrow has provided support to the students and families on these two teams with grace and kindness, and we’re lucky that she was a part of our team. For students who have made a connection with Ms. Morrow, let them know she’ll actually be around the school for a bit longer, as she helps us out with a few other roles in the near future.
Welcome back, everyone! Have a great week.
