Dear 6th Grade Families,
We are excited to welcome your child to RJ Grey Junior High this fall! The transition to 7th grade is an important and exciting one. We take this transition seriously and know that your understanding of the process is helpful for you and your child! The process begins with me using this message to share a bit about course registration.
Course registration will happen online through the Power School Parent Portal. Instructions for using the Parent Portal are included in the left sidebar (Registration Worksheet). Registration opens May 1 and must be completed by May 9, 2025.
Students will automatically be enrolled in 7th grade classes like English, Math, Science, Social Studies, Physical Education and Health, and Exploratories (sometimes called "Specials" in elementary school). Students can make choices for World Language and Grey Block, which are explained below.
World Language Choices
All students will take a World Language for both 7th and 8th grade — either Spanish or French. Please choose one. Students who successfully complete the two years usually move on to Intermediate Spanish I or French I in high school.
If your child’s Special Education plan affects World Language enrollment, please select "No World Language" on the Parent Portal after consultation with your child's 6th grade team.
Grey Block Choices
All students have a Grey Block class every other day. Students can choose Band, Chorus, or String Orchestra, all of which last a full year. If your child has participated in Band, Chorus, or Orchestra before, we encourage them to continue!
If not enrolled in Band, Chorus, or Orchestra, your student will be enrolled in the Grey Block Elective Rotation. Students in the Elective Rotation will take different electives each quarter, including one quarter of a Phys Ed-based class. Students will use the Parent Portal to rank their preferences for Grey Block classes. While we try to match choices, students may be placed in electives lower on their list. We are not able to make changes to electives once assigned. A full description of these options is included on the left sidebar.
Additional Information
Students who access the Academic Support Center (ASC), Math Explorations, or Reading will have those classes added by teachers. IEP services will be added later this spring.
We will have 3.4 teams of 7th graders next year. I will explain more about this during our Info Session on April 30th. Team placement focuses on creating balanced teams. We do not take requests for friends or specific teachers. However, if you have helpful information for us (for example, sibling placements), please complete the optional Family Information Form (linked in the left sidebar) by May 9, 2025.
Thank you for your help in completing course registration by the May 9th deadline. If you have questions, please start by reaching out to your child’s 6th grade teacher. If you need further assistance, please be in touch with us at [email protected].
Sincerely,
Jim Marcotte
Principal
