Good afternoon, RJ Grey Families:

Congratulations to all of you who have an RJ Grey band member in your home. Last night's Band Concert was quite a treat! With a standing-room-only auditorium, it was really awesome to hear our Jazz Band, 7th grade Band, and 8th grade Band perform for their families. Several things stood out to me while watching the concert. One - I imagine most of these students practice their instrument quite a bit at home! Thank you for making space for that practice at home. My own 6th grader dabbles in the flute but doesn't ever practice, so I was thoroughly impressed with the performances and the obvious time spent practicing! Secondly, I thought about our Band teachers, Ms. Dye and Mr. Soo, who have built routines and expectations that get a band of 99 students (in the 7th grade alone) to play together in such a unified way. The students' hard work, along with their teachers' hard work, was on display last night. I know the same will be true for our upcoming Chorus concert and Orchestra concert, too!

I've also been able to stop by a few of our RJ Grey basketball games recently. These are another example of opportunities that we provide for students to shine, doing something they love. Our players work together as a team, learn how to accept coaching and feedback, and work on skills to make their team shine. Even when the score may not reflect the effort that goes into their practices and games, we're proud of our players and coaches!

During our early release time on Monday, our staff worked together with an outside facilitator to improve our practices for teaching all students. Over recent years, the number of multilingual learners has grown at AB. We're taking several opportunities during our early release time this year to focus on our teaching practices to best meet the needs of these learners. Our teachers always impress me, but seeing them learn together and share their strategies is a great thing to witness.

Every January, when we turn the calendar to the new year, we start to think more specifically about planning for the next school year. Families of 8th graders will hear from the ABRHS principal in a few weeks with an invitation to attend the 8th grade family info night on Wednesday, February 11th, starting at 6 pm in the high school auditorium. Parents and guardians will hear from the Principal and other leaders about ABRHS. Please mark your calendars.

As we approach the long weekend in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr., I am reminded of just one of his famous quotes: "The time is always right to do what is right." The succinct language of this quote reflects the message that we often try to share with students. When they see someone in need, or they know something is just plain wrong, we ask them to do something and/or tell us. And overall, they do. Thanks for sharing your caring kids with us.

That's it for now - I hope you have a nice long weekend,

Jim
