Work Permits
WORK PERMIT PROCESS
Students must be a minimum of 14 years old to work in MA. In Massachusetts, work permits are required for any minor hired by an employer for pay (M.G.L. ch149, sec.86-89). The teen must obtain a permit and the employer must have it on file before work can begin.
Many parties play a role in ensuring there is a work permit for every teen job, including schools, employers, and parents. Below is a summary of what everyone should know about the Massachusetts work permit process:
-
The teen receives a job offer.
-
The teen should stop by the RJ Grey 8th Grade Counseling office to pick up a work permit application or download and print it from the link.
-
The teen should fill out the application, making sure it is signed by the teen, parent/guardian, and employer. If the teen is under the age of 16, a physician or school nurse must also sign.
-
The teen then brings the application to Mrs. Lewis in the RJ Grey Counseling Office, who then issues the work permit to the student within a couple days.
-
Finally, the teen brings the permit to his/her employer to keep on file, before beginning work.
*If you're looking for a work permit over the summer, contact Mrs. Chandler in the Main Office.
