Good afternoon, RJ Grey Families:

I hope you are doing well. We are wrapping up our March Madness Advisory Competition this week. Over the past few years, we have found that the March Madness competitions are fun for students and help to build the community that we hope for through our Advisory program. Ask your student how they did with today's "Name That Middle Schooler" competition. Students had to guess which of our RJ Grey staff members was described based on their middle school interests, hobbies, and personality. I think back fondly on my own middle school years. While the hairstyles and dress are different, in so many ways, with the exception of technology, middle schoolers from the 90s are very similar to middle schoolers of today. I see that being kind, attitudes about learning, approach to friendships, and other characteristics are all similar. Today's game was another reminder to our students that we were all middle schoolers once, too!

RJ Grey will be holding a Food Drive from April 1 - 16 to benefit the Acton Food Pantry. The Food Pantry is a great partner with the schools, including providing us with food items that students can take home for weekends and vacations. Food insecurity presents a challenge for many in our community, so when we are asked to help, we do! Specific items that would be helpful are: flavored oatmeal, nut-free granola bars, applesauce squeeze pouches, salty snacks (cheese crackers, pretzels, popcorn), Mac and cheese, boxed rice pilaf, cereal, canned pasta, and paper products like toilet paper and tissues. Students will drop off these items in their homerooms from April 1 - 16. Thank you in advance for your support.

As we approach spring and summer, there will be occasional opportunities that I'll share with you for consideration for programming or summer opportunities. Firstly, Emerson Hospital reached out to advertise a Babysitting Course that they are running on April 21. Check out this flyer for additional info. Secondly, our Comm Ed Summer Day Program is looking for student volunteers for their summer camp program. You can read more about their program description on this link. Please note that the program is really looking for student-driven applications. So please don't fill this out on behalf of your student without their input and buy-in!

Our MCAS testing season starts in two weeks, with ELA testing on both Tuesday (4/7) and Wednesday (4/8). Helping your students get to school on time, with something in their system from breakfast, will help them feel confident in the testing sessions. At RJ Grey, we value the data that MCAS gives us. One takeaway for us, in addition to individual student performance, is that MCAS measures how well we've taught the state frameworks. Thank you in advance for encouraging your child to do their best on this spring's assessments.

Have a good weekend,

Jim
