Good evening, RJ Grey Families:

I hope you're doing well. Our 7th graders enjoyed a great, albeit very warm, day at Mel's Funway today. Thank you to all the families for returning permission slips to make this fun day possible for our students. Tomorrow, our 8th graders are headed to Canobie Lake Park. If you can, please remind them to wear sunscreen and bring a water bottle! In other years, these two trips have occurred on the last two to three days of the school year. With June 25th being our last day of school and well after other districts end, we decided to move up our trips to take advantage of earlier opening times (9 am for Canobie) and to avoid the public (Mel's). The only thing that may backfire on us is that students will think the school year is over! Please help us by reminding students that there is still plenty to learn, assess, and enjoy over the next two weeks.

If your summer plans begin earlier than June 25th, please make sure to be in touch with teachers and the Main Office (rjgrey_main_office@abschools.org) to let us know the last day for your child. Students must return their Chromebooks, chargers, library books, and any other borrowed items, including texts from teachers' classrooms, before beginning their summer break. About half of our students ordered yearbooks, so if they end school before June 24th, they'll receive their book on their last day.

We've had some great evidence of student learning proudly on display over the last week or so. All of our 7th graders presented their Civics Fair projects to peers and teachers on Tuesday and Wednesday. And about 75 students took up our invitation to present to their families and community members after school on Wednesday. If you were able to attend, I hope you appreciated them as much as I did. Their topics were varied and interesting. What I like most about this project is hearing the students talk excitedly about their project. Some shared reasons "why" they chose their project, while others talked about what any one of us could do to help the cause. My favorite question to ask students is, "What surprised you when doing your research?" I heard a bunch of different answers that reminded me that sometimes just doing the research can lead us down a path of new discovery! Thanks for your support as your students worked on their projects in recent weeks.

Our Creative Writing Club recently published its annual literary magazine, Writer's Haven. Please take a look if you have some time. Our club advisors, Mrs. Bryan and Dr. Contini, work with students throughout the year, but this work really belongs to the students. Congratulations to all of them!

I hope you have a great weekend!

Jim
