Good afternoon, RJ Grey Families:
I hope to see many of you at tonight's Back to School Night. Please ask your child to give you their class schedule, which they filled out on colored paper during Homeroom on Tuesday afternoon. The schedule will have class times, subject and teacher names, and room locations. If your child doesn't have that to share with you, we will have backup copies in the lobby for you to take with you on your tour around the building. The goal of tonight is to have our teachers introduce themselves and to talk about their class, what they teach, some of their routines, etc. We don't have time for personal conversations and questions about your student's performance - those are best shared through email or by setting up a team meeting. If your child attends Band, Chorus, or String Orchestra during Grey Block, and you want to meet those teachers, you may do so from 6:25 - 6:40. The locations of those meetings are listed on the schedule. Otherwise, first period for all families starts promptly at 6:45, and we'll end at 8:25.
On Tuesday, our 8th graders were visited by the Director of Admissions from Minuteman High School in Lexington. She was joined by 6 current Minuteman students (from Acton) who talked about their experience attending high school at Minuteman. Minuteman High School is one of the options that our students have for 9th grade. If your child is interested in applying to Minuteman, they may do so by visiting the Minuteman website. There are a few opportunities coming up for interested students to visit Minuteman, including when we send a small group of interested RJ Grey students to Minuteman on November 6. 8th graders interested in this field trip should stop into the counseling center to request a permission slip. Other family visit opportunities are advertised on the Minuteman website. Staff from Acton-Boxborough Regional High School will meet with our 8th graders on Friday, October 23rd to talk about the experience at ABRHS. Any questions about high school, technical schools, or private schools can be directed to your child's school counselor.
On Monday, I met with all 7th graders to lead them through some learning about steps they can take to help interrupt hate and bias if and when they see/hear it. The students were a great audience and were interactive, helping to answer my questions. I am confident that our students care about creating a joyful, inclusive environment. I am including the slides that I used here in case you are interested.
I hope you have a good long weekend, Jim
