Good afternoon, RJ Grey Families:
Thank you to everyone for coming to last week's Back to School Night. I hope you were able to get a glimpse into how your RJ Grey student spends their days. Many of you thanked us for hosting the night, and it's truly our pleasure to invite you in for special events like this so you can see our teachers and be present in our space.
On Tuesday, I spoke with all of our 8th graders about how they can help to interrupt hate and bias when they become aware of it. Starting last year for our 8th graders, we extended our presentation to include information about the history of the Nazi swastika. Over the years, we have sometimes seen this symbol drawn in school or in our community. We thought it was important to educate students about the history of the symbol, including that in some religions and cultures, the symbol was used for peace and good fortune prior to it being used by Adolf Hitler. You can see our slides and watch our brief video by clicking here. Our students were a great audience, and many of them left feeling more confident in their understanding of this symbol and why we don't use it in our schools. Please chat with your 8th grader and see what they learned from our Tuesday assemblies.
It's hard to believe that we are in the middle of October already, and that we've arrived at the midpoint of Trimester 1! Today, our teachers are finishing up sending us information on which of their students will be receiving an Interim Report. We use interim reports to alert families to something that needs your attention. It might be a low grade on an assessment, missing homework assignments, or some behaviors that need addressing. Interim reports will be sent to families by email on Monday. Not every student will receive an Interim Report, but if you do, please take a look at the narrative that the teacher included and begin a conversation with your child. If you need to follow up and learn more, please be in touch directly with the teacher.
We had our first school council meeting of the year on Tuesday evening. I appreciate our parent reps who have offered their time to be part of the council. Patsy Bandes, Megan Connor, Nicole Gurga, Ruchi Jain, Josh Klemme, Jen Piccirilli, Lara Plaskon, and Maggie Saar will meet with me five more times this year. We'll talk about what's happening at RJ Grey, and I always value the perspective that the family representatives bring to our discussions. If you're ever curious and want to join our meetings, you are welcome to do so. Our meeting dates are posted on our School Council website, and I will always update agendas and Google Meet links prior to the upcoming meeting.
I hope you have a good weekend,
Jim
