Reading Comprehension FAQ

Reading Comprehension Class FAQ

1. Will my child be pulled from a class to attend reading?

Reading is scheduled as a separate class. Students are never pulled from another class for reading class.

2. What do students do in reading class at RJ Grey?

In reading class, we use a variety of current, high-interest readings to learn and practice valuable reading skills and strategies that students need for academic success. We also use interactive group learning activities and educational games to reinforce what students are learning. In addition, students respond to their reading, learn vocabulary in context, engage in book talks and book recommendations, and much more.

3. How does reading class help my child at the junior high?

Continuing to develop reading comprehension skills is important to the success of every child. Your child will refine and strengthen skills that will allow for analyzing text and mastering the content of all subject areas (social studies, science, math, etc.).

4. How many students are in a reading class at RJ Grey?

Generally, there are about 5 - 8 students per reading class. We do many of our lessons together as a whole group; other lessons are designed for each student’s individual areas of need.

5. How often does the reading class meet?

Reading class meets every other day for a full period (about 45 - 50 minutes).

6. How does reading class fit into a student’s schedule?

Students take reading class every other day. This takes place during either Exploratory or Grey Block time. If students take reading during Exploratory time, they take two Exploratory classes instead of four over the course of the school year. (Exploratory classes are Art, Music, Engineering Design, and Digital Literacy.) If students take reading during Grey block, it is in place of Band, Chorus, Orchestra, or an Elective.

7. Can my child still take Band, Chorus, or Drama if my child attends reading class?

Yes!  If students take Band, Chorus, or Orchestra, then they would take reading during an Exploratory period.

8. Can my child still take a world language if my child attends reading class?

Yes!  French and Spanish are academic classes, and there is no scheduling conflict. Students who take reading class do take French or Spanish.

9. What if my child is recommended for both ASC and Reading?

When students attend both ASC (Academic Support Center) and Reading, they have one during an Exploratory period, and the other during Grey Block or their other Exploratory period. This gives them time in their schedule to take two Exploratory classes or Grey Block during the school year.

10. How can I learn more about reading class at RJ Grey?
