Good afternoon, RJ Grey Families:

I hope you are doing well after digging out from this week's storm. While I always enjoy coming to work, I was particularly ready to come back yesterday. I worked from home on Monday and Tuesday and checked a few things off my to-do list, but there is far more interesting and worthwhile work to be done while kids and staff are in the building. I'm glad to be back, and I noticed that most kids felt the same yesterday. For those keeping track, our last day of school is currently Thursday, June 25th.

This week, I have a variety of announcements, so please read ahead:

Youth Risk Behavior Survey
The YRBS is given to 8th graders every other year. Our 8th graders will take the survey on Friday, March 13, as part of their science class. Please be sure to pay attention to the messaging that the District sent about this survey on Monday.

If you do not want your 8th grader to take part in this survey, please fill out this Opt-Out Form by Friday, March 6, 2026. You only need to fill out the form if you choose to opt-out. Note on TranslationTo translate the Opt-Out Form, click the link to the form. Right-click anywhere on the form, select "Translate," and choose your preferred language.

Spring Athletics Tryouts
We are getting closer to spring, which means spring sports will start up at the end of March.  We offer Baseball, Softball, Girls Volleyball, and Spring Track. Our list of tryouts and practices is posted on our website. Please note that any student interested in trying out for a sport needs to have a recent physical on file in our Health Office, and families must complete Family ID information before tryouts. If you have any questions, please be in touch with Jon Duclos (jduclos@abschools.org), our JH Athletic Director.

MCAS Schedule
Aside from the light changing in our mornings and late afternoons, another indicator that Spring is coming is that we start to prepare for MCAS here at RJ Grey. We’ve actually been preparing for quite a while behind the scenes, but below, I’m sharing the dates that we’ll be administering the tests this year.

At RJ Grey, students in both grades take MCAS tests in English Language Arts and Math. Our 8th graders take a Science/Technology Engineering assessment and Civics assessment, too. I thank you in advance for helping to make sure your child is present on testing days. We will always do make-ups for students who miss them, but they then end up missing other classes as a result. So if you’re forced to make orthodontic appointments or physicals during the school day, I’d ask you kindly to avoid these dates:

Tues and Wed, April 7 and 8: ELA MCAS (7th and 8th)
Wed and Thurs, May 7 and 8: Math MCAS (7th and 8th)
Tues, May 12: Science/Technology Engineering MCAS (8th)
Thurs, May 21: Civics MCAS (8th)

End of Trimester 2
We've had 4 snow days during trimester 2, and as a result, we are going to push out the end of trimester 2 by four days. The term will now end on Wednesday, March 18. Our team classes (Math, Science, etc.) are affected by this grading deadline. If your child has work to make up, please encourage them to connect with their teachers and finish it up prior to the end of the term.

I hope you have a nice weekend!

Jim
